We installed a reductive dechlorination pilot study by retrofitting an existing pump and treat system that had been operating for 7 years. The pilot study reduced chlorinated solvent concentrations by 99 percent in 5 months. The system extracts groundwater, amends it with a carbohydrate/nutrient solution, and reinjects the solution. This approach stimulates existing biological processes with a controllable food source, while protecting nearby residences by maintaining hydraulic control.
Post-study monitoring indicates that concentrations continue to decrease more than 7 months after the system has been shut down, and rebound in concentrations is not occurring.

This project involves an expressway link to Sea-Tac International Airport in conjunction with light rail. We conducted an environmental site assessment along this transportation corridor, including evaluating the potential for contamination from numerous types of nearby businesses. We also provided geotechnical design.
US Coast Guard
Guam
To help the US Coast Guard meet an accelerated schedule for property transfer to the US Navy, we completed this project ahead of schedule. During and after World War II, significant military activity took place here. We collected soil, paint, and building material samples; and reviewed historical records.
Portland Development Commission

This two-block area was once occupied by auto dealerships, auto repair/servicing, and/or machine shops. Hart Crowser assessed for and remediated contaminated soils on the site, including conducting a cleanup action within 1 month on one parcel to use escrow funds set aside for cleanup. The Oregon DEQ gave a No Further Action determination for the site, and redevelopment of the property has begun.

We helped our client address site constraints ranging from community review meetings to minimizing disposal of contaminated soils. We conducted site investigations, developed design documents and a monitoring plan, supported construction activites, and performed initial monitoring to improve this damaged boat ramp and cap contaminated soil at this popular recreation site.
We also combined biotechnical engineering and bank armoring to stabilize the stream bank. The site presented unique geomorphologic and hydraulic challenges due to its location on the outside curve of a river bend.

Hart Crowser is responsible for groundwater remediation of an active asphalt and bulk fuels terminal facility. The remediation includes dual skimming and groundwater extraction, passive recovery of separate phase hydrocarbons, and operation and maintenance of a groundwater treatment facility using fixed-film bioreactors.

Recent work at Fort Lewis includes sampling groundwater and soil at multiple areas. Doing the samplings simultaneously made the projects efficient and allowed for fast-track completion. We have worked on a wide variety of environmental projects at Fort Lewis since 1985.
